Year 7 and 8
Dance is taught within core PE lessons alongside gymnastics. Students are introduced to the foundation skills of performance and choreography.
Year 9 to 11
Students can opt to study Dance for GCSE over three years. Students who opt for this subject have six lessons a fortnight. The course has a weighting of 40% theory and 60% practical.
The theory lessons are based around six professional works (selected by the exam board AQA) and the study of performance skills. The practical lessons focus on technical skills to make each student a better dancer and help embed confidence in performance. Students are encouraged to choreograph and creative their own movement in preparation for their exams in year 11.
Year 12 and 13
Dance is taught at A level over two years (AQA). It is recommended that students who want to study this course, have gained a B grade at GCSE level or have been part of a dance company/school externally. The course is 50% theory and 50% practical.
The theory focuses on the History of Rambert Dance Company and some of its leading choreographers and the study of The Independent Dance Scene 2002-present. Students will be expected to be able to work independently and commit to rehearsing outside of the lesson.
Extra – Curricular
Dance offers an active extra-curricular programme. This includes boys parkour/street dance, key stage 3 dance clubs, primary leadership workshops, GCSE and A level exam preparation workshops. We also work closely with external dance schools as part of our community links.
