What is Forest School?

“Forest School is an inspirational process that offers children, young people and adults regular opportunities to achieve and develop confidence and self-esteem through hands-on experiences in a woodland environment.”

Forest Education Initiative, 2005a

The Forest School approach offers:

Supportive learning with a high student/adult ratio

Use of natural environment, materials and resources

Student-centred learning

Risk/benefit approach to tasks

Meaningful activities delivered with a holistic focus

Opportunity for personal growth and nature connection

Skills based practical activities

Encouragement of fun and lifelong learning

Forest School aims to increase personal growth and independence through holistic and learner centred approaches which promote emotional literacy and positive interactions. A focus on cooperation, communication, problem solving and reflection allows learners to progress and develop transferable skills.

Regular access to the outdoors, whilst participating in activities such as camp fire cooking, survival skills, team building games and environment & conservation work, offers a host of benefits. These benefits can include, a reduction in stress and anxiety, improved adaptability and increased independence, responsibility and self-reliance.
