WW1 Battlefields Trip

On 9th May, 42 Year 9 students met at the early hour of 4am to travel down to the coast in order to catch the Le Shuttle for an adventure off to Belgium and the World War 1 Battlefields.

The students were excited to take the journey on the Le Shuttle and we were soon approaching the North French coast, after a short hop across the Belgian border.

Our first port of call was Tyne Cot cemetery to see the huge wealth of nations who fought and lost their lives in the great battles. We took the opportunity to lay a wreath as a mark of respect from the college. Thank you to Charlie and Mason for performing this act with great dignity.

We then travelled to the Crater museum where we saw weapons, uniforms, war items and amazingly some of the planes and vehicles used during the conflict, then followed this up by visiting a trench system in a nearby battlefield, and were told how awful the conditions must have been for the soldiers sheltering in these.

Finally, we visited Ypres to view the impressive Menin Gate, and had free time to buy chocolates and waffles before we set off for the journey home reflecting on the images and memories we have made on this visit.

The students on this visit behaved impeccably and were an absolute credit to themselves and the college.
